Novgorod the Great Anniversary – an Event of Great Significance for Russia
Novgorod the Great is the most ancient city in the Russian Federation. Chronicles first mention it in 859. It is the city which united Russia’s North and North-East to subsequently form the Land of Novgorod. The ancient Novgorod land encompassed the territories of many modern regions including Leningrad, Murmansk, Arkhangelsk and Novgorod Regions, the present-day Republic of Karelia and the Komi Republic, Nenetsia and parts of modern Vologda and Kirov Regions, parts of Perm Territory and Estonia.
The unification of Novgorod and Moscow laid the foundation of the Russian state. Novgorod the Great made a important contribution to the development of Russian democracy and state formation.
By the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation Novgorod the Great anniversary is granted a nationwide status.
I am sure that this significant event commemorating the anniversary of such ancient Russian city will play an important role in maintaining ancient traditions, strengthening the state system and uniting Russians.
